Tom is a fictional character from the long-running animated cartoon series, Tom & Jerry. He first appeared in the short film "Puss Gets the Boot" in 1940. Created by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera, Tom is a blue-grey domestic shorthair cat.
Tom's primary goal is to catch Jerry, a brown mouse, but his efforts are consistently thwarted. The duo's comedic, often violent, slapstick antics form the core of each episode.
